When interviewing contractors for a new ground up hillside construction – included in the interview was a request to visit past built works – providing an opportunity to engage firsthand with the respective qualities of craft. It was during and in response to these site visits that DTK Builders was selected… for the sense of place conjured in their works, the quality (and longevity) of craft exhibited… and for me – the observation that left the strongest and most lasting impression – their relationships with former clients. In visiting DTK’s past projects, there was a strong consistency not only in the work, but also – and perhaps more importantly – the relationships… relationships of mutual respect, familiarity, and trust. Having collaborated with DTK on both the Baxter Street Residence (a new +5,000 sf ground up hillside construction) from 2017-2019, as well as the Revere Avenue Residence (a +1,700 sf one-story remodel and addition, with the addition +300 sf) from 2020-2023, I understand – from my own experiences – why those initial project visits and observed relationships reverberated the way they did. There is an integrity, transparency, and authenticity to DTK’s team… which fosters a sustained, open, honest dialogue throughout the project… in service – always – of the best interest of the project (considering budget, schedule, design, and longevity). While I can elaborate in great detail on the specifics of my experiences with DTK – and am very happy to – perhaps what I most value in my continued collaborations with them is that I have always felt they understood the spirit and identity of the work – and – cared as deeply for the work as the owners and myself, allowing the project to become a vehicle of collective strengths, with one of DTK’s greatest strengths being the expertise and innovation they bring to construction.
The first thing Dave King told us when he walked through our site almost 10 years ago was “I know you’re going to get three bids, and mine will be the most expensive…but everyone who works for me is great and we’ll agree on a date to finish this project, you give me your house keys when you move out and I’ll give them back on that date we agree upon.” Dave’s bid was about 13% more than the other contractors we talked to, but we like Dave’s no B.S. attitude and could tell that he knew what he was talking about, case in point, our first architect wanted to move a stairway to our basement and Dave said that their calculations were incorrect and their idea wouldn’t work…he was right…and we changed architects). Along the way, we got to know Dave’s project manager and all of his carpenters on a first name basis and we were carefully guided through the process of the bid, the schedule of view, material choices, finishing decisions, and completion calendar. It was a 9 month process, during which we reinstalled 29 new windows, 4 doors, a entirely new HVAC system, all new copper plumbing, a new roof and solar, a completely new kitchen, new stucco, paint interior and exterior, a brand new kitchen, office and bedroom, aking with a top down renovation of 3 bathrooms and restored hardwood flooring throughout. We were a mere 2 weeks over schedule for that time period. So many of our friends have had renovations that have gone over by several months…and sometimes years. We have three close friends who are in lawsuits with their contractors, because so many contractors are completely unethical and simply not talented. The additional percentage we paid for the work was easily worth it, especially as nothing had to be fixed once we were done…and a Spanish Colonial House from 1936 was restored to its original glory with modern updates and all the work is seamless. DTK Builders gets our highest recommendation for their skillset and honesty. You get what pay for, especially in this town.
When people call me for your reference, here's what I tell them. DTK will not be the cheapest, nor the fastest. If that is the most important criteria, then they may need to look elsewhere. But if they are looking for best value, then you would be a great candidate. I tell them the story of my house - it was all the money I had, I needed someone I could trust, and who would build the house the way I wanted. The end product is great. He brings a high level of craftsmanship and construction knowledge to his projects.
